Up for your consideration is this latest work, an 80 minute history chronicling the best of atmospheric drum & bass. This new mix is a startling change of direction in terms of the history of material on here, but makes perfect sense to those who know me. Despite my rare excursions into drum & bass, I hold the atmospheric/intelligent subgenre in extremely high regard, and consider it one of the most tragically overlooked in the grand sphere of electronic music. The current generation’s version — liquid drum & bass — captures the spirit but not the essence of its forefather. This sound is so pure, that even fifteen years later it manages to sound fresh, original and brilliantly-conceived. These tracks have been culled from my collection of favorites over the years, notably Adam F’s “Circles” (my first exposure to drum & bass), and the jazz-influenced “Watercolours,” by the legendary LTJ Bukem. While this mix is by no means a complete representation of the atmospheric sound, it shines the spotlight broadly on one of the most beloved and forgotten niches of electronic music.
